‘In Vogue: the90’s’
A recently launched docuseries explores how Vogue America shaped the '90s fashion landscape. As a '90s girl, I loved every second and binge-watched it over the weekend. However, I must say it's meticulously curated by Vogue's team, with Anna always appearing graceful and seemingly less involved in some of the decade's most troubled moments. Overall, it's fun to watch, and the narrative is well-constructed. Vogue indeed was extremely powerful in shaping the spirit of the '90s, but there are underlying reasons and some characters who don't appear with the relevance they actually had.

The Supermodels
Continuing the '90s theme, another docuseries delves into stories from that era. "The Supermodels" from Apple+ begins in the '80s, chronicling how Naomi, Linda, Cindy, and Christy became the powerhouses they are today. The documentary doesn't shy away from delicate topics, such as Naomi's drug abuse and her unforgettable community service dressed in Dolce&Gabbana alta moda. It's clear the story is told from their perspective, which brings new life to some of the biggest '90s trends. The series also offers a fresh take on how supermodels became obsolete in favor of newer, cheaper, and more malleable models.

📚 Book
‘Streetstyle’ by Ted Polhemus
Already a classic of fashion theory, published in 1994, "Streetstyle" by anthropologist Ted Polhemus delves deep into the subcultures on the streets, from the UK to Jamaica. The result was a fashion exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and also one of the most important fashion theories of the late 20th century. The author revisits Georg Simmel's Trickle-down theory from 1904, which states that fashion trends are a succession of differentiation games from the elites to the working class. Polhemus argues that by the end of the 20th century, we see a "bubble-up" effect—trends emerging from the streets and working-class groups, eventually reaching established fashion houses. As an example, he cites the glamorous punk revival brought by Gianni Versace, among many other subcultures explored in the book. Filled with images of these groups, the book is a delight to read and offers a fresh perspective on 20th-century fashion.

'In Vogue: os anos 90'

As Supermodelos
